A Piradical Day at the Ballpark

Yesterday, Nate and I attended an Indianapolis Indians/Pawtucket Red Sox game with twelve of our friends. It was an interesting day to say the least, but in order to fully understand I need to explain some background information.

The friends we went to the game with were from Piradical Productions. Piradical is a concert booking company in Indy. From years of attending concerts and putting them on together we have formed a really strong community of friends. This includes a house in the Irvington neighborhood of the city where a lot of Piradicals live.

Rather than trying to tell you about the Piradicals, I believe I'll just let the following events speak for themselves.

We arrived at the ballpark about forty minutes before the first pitch and staked out a spot on the seating berm in left field. I was actually surprised how well this entire plan had worked out as sometimes trying to get Piradicals to meet up and execute a plan is like trying to herd cats.

It was an interesting dynamic as most that came with us had either never been to a baseball game or they had not attended one in years, and that was contrasted with Nate and myself constantly discussing random baseball-related things.

Baseball has recently seen a resurgence in the lives of a few Piradicals, as we have weekly baseball night on Tuesdays where we just watch games on MLB.tv until the west coast games conclude. So when it was proposed that we should go to an Indians game, a decent amount of us jumped at the chance.

As we were sitting in the lawn, I warned everyone that swearing would not be a good idea due to the fact we were surrounded by small children. A warning which, if you're a regular reader of this blog, was just as much for me as everyone else.

This wasn't all bad though, as it created some interesting heckling opportunities. For example, Stephen (the founder of Piradical) substituted Pawtucket in place of the obscenity. Also if you're wondering why he has the lid of a cooler on his head was due to the fact he forgot to bring a hat and we were sitting in direct sunlight.

Not surprisingly though, Stephen yelling with a cooler lid on his head was not the strangest thing that happened all game.

Our friend Mitch fell in love with appearing on the video board. First it was the flex cam as you can see above. This was followed by one of the weirdest occurrences that I have ever heard of, as I actually didn't witness this. During the seventh inning stretch, Mitch decided that when he appeared on the video board again he would then proceed to make out with our friend Scotty. It was basically done for shock value and sheer unexpected hilariousness.

Yet, this wasn't the end for Mitch. When the dance cam came on before the start of the 8th, Nate and Mitch stood up and began dancing. Sadly for Nate, he didn't hear Mitch claim "If the camera comes on me I'm doing it again with the person nearest to me." When the inevitable happened, (trust me, if you saw Nate's dancing you'd know it was only a matter of time) Mitch grabbed Nate and promptly kissed him.

This resulted in several things:

1) Nate in shock/horror quickly tried to evade. It worked, somewhat.
2) The video board switched as soon as whoever was controlling it realized what was going on.
3) Our entire group fell over laughing and continued laughing for a good minute and a half.
3) Nate decided that I would have to write this recap as he "did not want to relive that moment."

Also, for the record, Mitch is not a homosexual. He just did it for the lulz.

Finally, towards the end of the game as our friend Sam whom we call Reptar was yelled at by a nearby man because he apparently was upset with us. As he put it, "I have kids and I've been listening to you guys all game."

Here's the problem with that though. If the man had a problem with us he should have said something prior to two outs away from the end of the game. Additionally, we have no idea what we could have possibly done wrong as we weren't swearing or doing anything that could possibly be seen as offensive...well, except for Mitch.

If he found two dudes kissing offensive...well, that a different debate for a different day. So to that man, where ever he is, we'd like to issue the official blog reaction to behavior like that. Seriously though, we find the reaction puzzling as we didn't do anything offensive or wrong.

Although, he may have some sort of a point as by the middle of the 8th the lawn area around us was basically empty in an almost perfect radius. This was probably due to the fact it was warming up and there was no shade, but we're going to take credit for it anyway. This of course upholds one of our various mottos, "No one clears out a section like us."

Honestly though, I was glad I could share the game I love with a group of friends who usually don't go to baseball games, and even if we apparently we a burden for some to be around, I'm just happy my friends enjoyed themselves.

Oh...yeah...there was a game too. Here's the game recap:

  • It was a decently high scoring affair with the Pawsox taking this one 7-5.
  • Andrew McCutchen proved to us why he will not be in Indy for much longer as he went 2 for 5, with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the 1st. McCutchen almost added a second homer to his tally in the 9th, but came just feet short of cutting the Pawsox lead to one.

The most impressive part of McCutchen's game was his glove, as he seemed to be everywhere and made a few incredible catches to save runs from piling up on the board.
  • One thing that took Nate and me by surprise was an appearance by Mark Kotsay. After some debate between us whether or not it was a rehab assignment, we have discovered through MiLB.com that he is in fact rehabbing.
  • Another thing that was surprising is the fact that Carlos Maldonado is still playing professional baseball. Apparently he is and he's batting .256 through 12 games in Pawtucket.
  • Garrett Jones drove in his 33rd run of the year and he currently leads the Indians in that category.
  • The game's box score can be found here.

Nothing wrong with having a good time at a minor league ball game.
